All About Garlic
In addition to its many culinary uses, garlic is an excellent companion plant around the vegetable garden. Its strong scent repels numerous pests and attracts beneficial insects. In most regions, garlic gets planted in late fall or early spring and is ready to harvest in mid to late summer.
Garlic plants grow best in a location that gets full sun and has rich, well-draining soil with a neutral to slightly acidic soil pH level. Hardneck and softneck are the two main types of garlic. Hardneck varieties produce a stiff central stem, called a scape, and often have fewer, larger cloves with a more robust flavor. Softneck garlic lacks a central stem and usually has smaller cloves arranged in layers. Softneck varieties tend to store better and are often preferred for braiding.
